SlowTalk: how we manage time?
How do we manage time? - How does time manage us?
... or asked differently: How do we use our time (when we have it)? How does it affect us (if we do NOT have it)?
When you ask people these days, “How are you doing?” the answer is more often than not “Busy!” Sometimes people don’t even take the time to stop and share how they are doing because they are running late for something. It seems that from the time we get up in the morning until we go to sleep at night, our days are governed by time. Instead of following the cyclical rhythm of the heavenly bodies, as humans used to do, we follow the dictates of alarm clocks, timetables, and agendas in a linear progression where every minute counts. Punctuality is considered a sign of competent and professional behavior. Taking time to smell the roses or lend a hand to somebody in need outside of work is frowned upon as irresponsible and amateurish.
Instead of running late or “out of time,” what would it be like if we were “in time.” And by this I do not mean to be “on time” for an appointment, but to literally be in time, i.e. experience time for what it is – or can be.
When were you last immersed in the current of time? This could be working intensively towards a deadline at work, but it's more likely to occur during a lively conversation with a friend, reading an inspiring book, or making music. How did you feel then?
Tonight we will take the time to explore a subject which many of us are struggling with and, who knows, it may change your relationship with time altogether.
